Using inking as a focal point

1/1/2019

This is my last installment for the Altenew Education Certification level one courses. This is the tenth card I have made for Level One certification. I have been very inspired by the classes I took from Altenew Academy and was glad to have a push to restore some crafty mojo. I also got some great ideas of how to use the stamps, dies and inks in my stash to make some different designs. For today’s card, I used Distress Ink blending as a background and die cut a window to expose the colors. Read on for how I put together this simple card.

Using Die Cuts on Cards

12/31/2018

For today’s card, I used dies and die cuts to make this card stand out. This card is another submission for the Altenew Educator Certification Program for the Easy Die Cutting class. The instructor in this class had a lot of unique ideas for how to use dies in different ways to achieve various looks on a card. For this card, I am using the Altenew Plaid A cover die and the Altenew inline alphabet dies. Please read along for how I made this card.

Let it shine

12/17/2018

AECP class on using shiny elements to a card

For the next class in the Altenew educator program, Let it shine, the instructor introduced a lot of ways to add shine to a card. The class inspired me to try a few different elements to add shine including: heat embossing, adding foil with tape and glitter. I noticed that all the card examples were very clean and simple with a lot of white to balance the metallic elements on the example cards. For the card I made, I used Altenew’s Vintage Teacup Stamp set. This is a layering stamp set with a lot of cute coordinating sentiments. Please read on for how I assembled this card.

Ink Blending Class

Altenew Ink Blending Techniques Class

Todays post is on my inspiration from Altenew’s Easy Ink Blending Techniques class. I’m not new to ink blending but still have trouble with dark edges and selecting colors. My go to ink for ink blending is Distress Ink although any ink would do. Using a dye based ink helps if you’d like to do watercolor or water techniques after the blending. For today’s cards I did an emboss resist, ink blending and then added watercolor for extra detail. I was really inspired by this class and made three cards using the Altenew Botanical Garden Stamp Set.

Thankfulness series, pt 1

Thank you cards

Sometimes in your life, the right person comes around just at the right time to help you continue on your journey. I recently had this happen to me and it inspired me to do a series on Thank You cards. It is important to let those people in your life know what you mean to them and how they have helped you along on your path; either to get you back onto the path or to help you continue your path.

Sparkling holiday card

12/22/2017

Celebrating the season with some bling

Picture
Holidays are all about the sparkle and magic of the season. The temperatures get colder, hearts fill with cheer and there's something happy and magical about the time. The Tonic Nuvo Glimmer Paste and Newton's Nook Snowfall Stencil I had used on a previous card needed to make another appearance. The shine and dimension from the Glimmer Paste really makes the stencil design stand out. Before putting away my holiday stamps and dies, I wanted to make just another design for the season. The holidays is a time when shimmer and sparkle are expected and are not over the top for a card.

Christmas Inspiration I

One Layer Holiday Cards

On my continued kick to spread kindness, I thought that the holiday season was a great time to whip up some quick one layer cards with hand written from the heart sentiments to let people in my life know how much I appreciate them. I was looking for some simple designs as I needed to make a lot of these cards. I came up with 4 designs that I will share with you today.

Thinking Inking

10/29/2017

Texture play with ink and stencils

What I have been discovering in card making is a sense of freedom to try new things. I am more willing as a card maker to attempt a new technique or practice with a product with the understanding that I will mess up but each mistake is a step in the overall journey. To that end, I recently went to Jenn Shurkus' Creative Journey: An Art Retreat on Cape Cod. At that retreat, I was able to play with some stamps and techniques I do not normally try and get some ideas. My friend also won a Tim Holtz Plaid Layering Stencil which I am highlighting in today's card. I am also highlighting some techniques that may seem a bit daunting but I encourage you to try them and take a step forward on your creative journey.
A great background can sometimes be all you need to make your card. I started with a piece of Neenah Solar White 80lb paper cut to 5 3/4 x 4 1/2. I applied Distress Inks with my Mini Blending Tool by starting off the paper and moving in a circular motion onto the paper. This process takes patience as you build up the color layers. Wanting to create an ombre effect, I chose three pink colors: Spun Sugar, Worn Lipstick and Picked Raspberry and three orange colors: Dried Marigold, Wild Honey and Carved Pumpkin. Visually dividing the paper into halves, I applied Spun Sugar to the top half, Worn Lipstick to the top third and Picked Raspberry to the top quarter of the paper. After drying the ink, I turned my paper 180 degrees and in the same manner created an ombre of Dried Marigold to the half, Wild Honey to the third and Carved Pumpkin to the quarter of the page making sure to blend between colors. I then used my lightest shade: Spun Sugar and Dried Marigold to go over their respective halves of the paper and blend them into the middle.

My Monthly Hero August Stamp Kit Ideas

10/13/2017

Stamp Kits

Hero Arts has been putting out monthly stamp kits that include: stamps, dies, paper and some embellishments for over a two years now. It is a great way to get a set of exclusive stamps and accouterments for a great price. The Kits sell out quickly so you need to either pay for a subscription or order quickly. I like ordering these because I come up with a ton of ideas of what to do with them quickly. Here are a few of my ideas using the August Kit highlighting: die inlay, stencils and watercoloring.
